Photomagic 44 is a one-week intensive introduction to traditional black and white photography.
What¹s so magical about traditional black and white photography? With the advent of digital photography, it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to experience the thrill of watching a photograph emerge from blank paper to image. Traditional black and white photography has volumes to teach emerging photographers about the basics of what makes an excellent
photograph including; the relationship between light and image, seeing qualities of light, developing an eye for composition, and learning to control print quality. Since photography means writing with light, there is nothing like working with light sensitive black and white film, a manual camera and hands-on darkroom printing to learn key photographic skills.
PhotoMagic 44 is a five-day photography camp for youth aged
13 -19. This innovative and intensive week-long camp will utilize the extensive production and darkroom facilities at Gallery 44, focus on our unique location in the 401 Richmond arts building situated among many of Toronto's leading artist-run galleries, as well as Gallery 44¹s location in the heart of downtown Toronto.
PhotoMagic 44 will integrate hands-on photographic art making including instruction in shooting and printing black and white photographs, with visual skill development. Participants will take local shooting trips to such locations as the Toronto Island and the Distillery District in addition to visiting local galleries to view a range of contemporary art. Participants will engage in a discussion of what they¹ve seen at the galleries and also share and talk about their own photographs.
Participants will:
* Shoot their own photos with a manual 35 mm film camera (provided by Gallery 44).
* Print black and white photographs in a traditional wet darkroom.
* See and learn about contemporary art and artists in Toronto.
* Learn alternative photo techniques such as photograms and liquid light.
* Take photographic field trips to such locations as Toronto Island and Distillery District.
