Accumulations (désirs et réalités du travail)

Steve Leroux

Steve Leroux, Nadia

Steve Leroux’s Accumulations (desires and realities of work) is comprised of a series of photographs of young artists at work juxtaposed with texts that elaborate an existential narrative framework. Through this filter, he explores the world of work as it exists between the trivial realities and the introspective challenges of the creative process. Characterized by stops and starts, flights of fancy, and emotional turmoil, the artist’s production occurs between the process of reflection and the necessities of meeting one’s day to day material needs. Produced in collaboration with Sandra Fillion, the texts in Accumulations interweave newspaper clippings with passages from Fillion’s intimate journals. A fusion, both lyrical and confrontational, this testimonial documentary challenges our perceptions of the artists life.

Bio
After studying photography at the CEGEP in Matane, Steve Leroux graduated with a BFA, majoring in photography, from Concordia University in 1998. He has presented his work in group shows in Québec and abroad. Recent solo exhibitions have been presented at the Maison de la Culture Cote-des-Neiges, Montréal and the artist-run centre Caravanserail, Rimouski. His search for a personal relationship with his environment has resulted in an uncommon imagery that seeks to capture a sense of intimacy.

Accumulations was made possible through the financial assistance of the conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
