The Bureau of Migrating Lyrical Objects (BOLM)

Anne Fauteux

Objet "V", mixed media

Using performance, sculpture, installation, and photography, Anne Fauteux's exhibition project BOLM depends on the direct involvement of gallery viewers, inviting them to become participants in the creative process. Situated somewhere between library, travel agency, boutique, and archive, this "bureau" supersedes the gallery, acting not only as a point of access for viewing art objects but also as a meeting place between the artist (olmothéquaire) and the public. Fauteux, present in the gallery throughout the duration of BOLM, invites viewers to try on and borrow her wearable sculptures for several days. Once an objet lyrique migrateur (OLM) is selected, the participant fills out a loan sheet and is photographed in the gallery wearing it. Participants are then sent out into the world with a flash camera and asked to perform/document wearing the OLM in public and private spaces. This documentary material is added to the BOLM installation forming the basis of an archive of events enacted for the camera. BOLM serves to democratize the artistic process by infiltrating daily realities outside the gallery sphere through its collaborators - the individual participants who agree to engage both with the objects, the public around them, and (through the photographic process) the gallery viewers in each new venue. Photography, however is not merely the means to document and perpetuate the performance - it is above all its raison d'être.
