Codicologie(s)

Vid Ingelevics and Patrick Altman

Installation View, Vu, Quebec City, 2001

This collaboration, instigated by Vu Gallery (Quebec) investigates the slippery relationships between the photographic document and the objet d’art, using utilitarian objects found in museum installation departments as source material. Here, images shot from colour coded folders and painter’s drop sheets from Musée du Québec are blown up to the scale of heroic painting and situated within the gallery as aesthetic objects. Presented as painterly tableaux, these large colour photographs oscillate between what they (actually) represent, and what they have become in the context of an art gallery show.

Join artists Vid Ingelevics and Patrick Altman, CV Photo editor Jacques Doyon, University of Toronto’s Elizabeth Legge and moderator Katy McCormick for a lively discussion of Codicologie(s) and related work, Friday, February 7 at 2:30 pm, at Ryerson University, 122 Bond Street, room 307. This panel is presented in the context of Quebec/Ontario: New forms, New Works; a biennial of artistic exchange, February 6 – 9, 2003. See www.imagearts.ryerson.ca/QuebecOntarioSymposium for details.
