Andrew Forster
Opening Reception Feb 12, 6-8 pm
These subjects, looking at their own reflections in the mirror, were photographed
over a period of three years in various situations. Each sitter has composed
him/herself for their portrait. The camera captures what is
normally a private moment spent before the mirror, putting on
the face we present to the world. The presence of the photographer adds
an additional gaze to the equation: The subjects see themselves being
seen, and are seen (by the photographer and by the viewer) looking at
their own images. One hundred fourty-four of these portraits are reproduced,
one per page, in an artist's book of the same title.
Montreal artist Andrew Forster's work includes writing, photography,
artists books, installation and performance. Recent work includes
collaborations with architects Atelier Big City and choreographer Suzanne
Miller. Forster is co-editor of Burning Editions and founder of PUSH,
a cross-disciplinary company producing projects in performance, visual
art and other genres (for further information see www.reluctant.ca).
