2000 PROOF7

Featuring: Isabelle Hayeur (Montréal), Josie Chu (Calgary)
and Bart Gazzola (Saskatoon)

Proof is an annual exhibition of work by emerging artists selected from a national call for submissions. As a non-thematic exhibition, Proof foregrounds some of the diverse material approaches and conceptual concerns of contemporary Canadian photographers. Josie Chu's contribution to PROOF7 will feature sculptural photographs, images which take the form of Chinese take-out boxes. Her work revolves around the theme of childhood perceptions in an attempt to resolve notions of family, cultural traditions and beliefs. Bart Gazzola's work focuses on the socially invested body, and the inherent contradictions of these social constructs. His images utilize historical and religious projections of the sacred and profane imposed on the body and the contradictions and dependence of these cultural designations. Isabelle Hayeur's work is concerned with rural and urban development, through an examination of landscape architecture and urban planning design. By analyzing the reciprocal relationship between the "real" world and representations of the world, Hayeur creates digital images that challenge the way we perceive the shapes around us, and how those spaces reveal a human presence and consciousness.
