Exhibitions 2000-2001 February 8 - March 10, 2001 CONVERGENCES élémentaires Sylvie Readman
For over a decade, Sylvie Readman has been recognized widely for her poetic and intellectually rich photographs. Readman is part of a generation of Québec artists, emerging during the 1980s-including Claude-Philippe Benoît, Genèvieve Cadieux, and Angela Grauerholz-who have utterly shifted the ground of photographic practice in that province. These artists effectively unseated what had been the dominant photographic discourse in Québec, namely the documentary mode, as exemplified by the photography of Gabor Szilasi and the early work of Michel Campeau, among others. In its place they have drawn, to varying degrees, on theoretical formations to reinvent photography as language. Sylvie Readman has been a key figure in these changes.
