Réflexion

Celine Messier

Installation View, Galerie R3, Université du Québec a Trois-Riviéres, 2000

Messier’s large colour photographs of draped armchairs occupy the gallery like so many sites of repose. Perhaps the comfortable oversized fauteuil pictured in them is always the same one, perhaps not. The changing play of light casts each image differently, creating a sensual visual field akin to the surfaces of classically robed figures. Fragments of the body constitute another sensual element here: a bare foot that has just touched the ground, the diaphanous image of a hand held aloft… We are simultaneously attracted and overwhelmed by these giant forms. Our bodies shift imperceptibly as we imagine entering these spaces, yet perceiving the impossibility of abording them, we simply rest, transfixed by their seductiveness.
