Still Life

Bianca Hook, Euan MacDonald, Carl Reglar and Fraser Stables

Lee Rodney, curator

Fraser Stables, Stranger, 1998, still from one-channel video installation (16mm transferred to laser disc, b&w, silent) projected image, 19 x 147".

Still Life presents the work of four artists who create formally precise works which document banal, everyday collectibles, such as toys, buttons, nails and bits of string. The curatorial premise for the show is loosely based on Michael Fried's notion of pure opticality, which purports a notion of the visual divorced from all context, including time, space or perceptual apparatuses. While the works in this exhibition do not share an engagement with an overarching discursive paradigm or working method, each of the works resonate with the notion of a generic object frozen, bracketed or suspended in time.
