The
Fall
Peggy Taylor-Reid
Opening May 2, 6-8 pm
May 2 - June 1, 2002
Taylor-Reids work references the Biblical Fall in a general
way. As a womanmother, wife, daughtershe is well versed
in the guilt and blame placed on women in patriarchal culture. On
a more personal level, the reference to falling has to do with the
long-term disability she has suffered as the result of a concussion.
The consequence of which leaves her with dizziness and impaired
vision. These issues come together in a series of disturbing triptychs,
shot underwater, which bring to mind a struggle for air, light,
and release.
Forever
Young in Song
Suzy Lake
Opening June 7, 6-8 pm
June 7 - July 9, 2002
Continuing her series exploring the 21st century obsession with
pop fame and eternal youth through the fictional character of "Suzy
Peau de Soie," Lakes large colour self-portraits deliberately
transgress the beauty code. Even as she adopts the forms of youth
culture, the artist deconstructs them by allowing the real effects
of aging (such as the three- month growth of a 54 year old womans
facial hair) to disrupt the process of an easy reading. The Vitrines,
as large light boxes, are the perfect vehicle to both perpetuate
and disrupt the media and advertising codes this work seeks to address.
