Alex Homanchuck, Detail from Method of Dream Interpretation III, 2002

A manuscript whose original text has been partially effaced and written over—often several times over the period of many years—the palimpsest is particularly intriguing when considered in relation to memory and perception. Metaphorically, the palimpsest’s half erased texts are similar to the way our own memories are formed, forgotten, and recalled. Analogous to history and perception, texts gain new meanings, not only with each new reading but also in relation to their context and interpretation. My interest lies within the parameters of these evolving and fluid relationships. Through the process of layering and eliminating texts—authentic and falsified—my project becomes a personal link to an infinitely evolving palimpsest.
