Frances Key, Syd's Vest (detail), 2002

Using discarded pattern pieces found in Toronto dumpsters, Key addresses the loss of her father as well as the way in which clothing perpetuates the presence of its wearers. Using media such as Polaroid transfer, photo silk-screen, lithography, and liquid light, Key overlays fragments of family photographs, a WW II correspondence between her father and grandmother, and references to tailoring on a vest made of silk and organza. Combining such elements, the artist plays upon the notion that the presence of the wearer is both absorbed by and imprinted into garments.
