A Body Called Light
Nicola Woods

May 1 to May 31, 2003

Nicola Woods, (detail, work in progress), 2003

In this triptych of light box pieces designed specifically for the Vitrine Cases at Gallery 44, Nicola Woods presents images of eyes that make historic and visual references to both the camera obscura and scientific theories regarding vision and light. She also explores the notion of the body as a paradoxical vessel; one that both contains and leaks, is solid and porous,
and is composed of visible and invisible matter. By suggesting visual parallels between the molecular structures in the body and the stars and planets in outer space, Woods raises intriguing questions about the nature of human existence and the connections between body, intellect, and spirit.
