Johannes Zits

Calvin Klein Centrefold, 1998 mixed media, projection

Johannes Zits' installations, composed of projections and drawings, transform magazine-like settings into intimate, particular spaces. Creating his figures first through masking or blocking out their shapes in the projections, he then fills them in, splashing ink on drawing paper, later mounting them directly on the gallery wall. As the drawings dry, they buckle, creating raised, uneven surfaces. Illuminated by the projected spaces they occupy, his spectre-like figures are defined both through presence and absence, fixed yet floating. Working simultaneously on several versions of the same drawing, Zits selects the image that best conveys the quality of being just visible enough to seem real. Located comfortably, his figures are at home, unaware of scrutiny. At home they partake in private acts, effectively claiming their private space while positioning gallery viewers as voyeurs. Injecting a contemporary visibility into an invisible history, these images of men with men convey both sexual realities and sexual histories
