Grades 7-12

Students learn about photography by creating their own camera. The first half of this workshop will feature a presentation providing a historic overview of the origins of the pinhole camera and a look at a multitude of different artist made cameras and techniques including panoramic pinhole cameras, anamorphic pinhole cameras, multi-pinhole cameras and multiple exposure techniques. In the second half of the workshop, students will build their own panoramic pinhole camera. Following step-by-step instructions, students will construct a simple tin-can camera using common household items. For the remainder of the workshop participants will work with their self-built pinhole camera, producing black and white photo-paper negatives that will later be contact printed in the darkroom to create final positive prints.
