Artist’s Statement
Impressions
impressions:n.1. effects produced on the mind. 2. uncertain ideas, beliefs and memories. 3. imitations of a person. 4. the impressing of marks
Photographic images tickle the viewer’s mind with the impression that they are a fact(s) which the viewer begins to believe are true.
However, my constant quest in the search to expose something relevant to my identity, is attempted through a process of manipulation of found photographic images and negatives. The photograph ultimately remains an impression – that engenders a sense of memory, ideas and beliefs of which will always remain within the realm of uncertainty.
These photographs originate from a few of many family “archives”. In re-working them, through this exploration of a time unknown to my physical life, I have allowed and encouraged myself to experience elusive glimpses into my past only to push me further into this historical void that I have yet to further discover and resolve.
