Proof is Gallery 44’s annual group exhibition of work by emerging* Canadian artists, reflecting a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary photography and lens-based media. Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist. Past exhibitions have featured work by Kotama Bouabane, Leila Fatemi, Isabelle Hayeur, Anique Jordan, Laurie Kang, Germaine Koh, Luther Konadu, Meryl McMaster, Elise Rasmussen, and Althea Thauberger.
Gallery 44’s open call for Proof occurs once a year, inviting emerging* Canadian lens-based artists to apply. Proof 28 will take place in late spring, early summer with an opening date in June 2022.
The submissions received through the Proof open call are juried by Gallery 44’s Exhibitions Programming Committee (EPC) and a Proof artist from the previous year. The committee is composed of the Executive Director, the Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs, two community members, two Gallery 44 members, and one board member. Every submission is considered. Together, the EPC and the past Proof participant create a shortlist and then decide on the successful applications.
To apply, please send the required submission materials to email@example.com. The subject of your email should be “Proof 28”. Submissions must be received before 5pm EST on Thursday September 30, 2021. Late applications will not be considered. All applicants will hear back within 4 months of the deadline. Unfortunately, due to a high volume of applicants, Gallery 44 is unable to provide feedback on submissions.
Required Submission Materials (an online form to upload your submission will become available in January 2021):
- Artist statement
- Exhibition Proposal
- Images (10-20 jpegs)
- Video links if applicable (maximum of 3)
Your artist statement should outline how the body of work you are submitting relates to your practice as a whole, and how and why the materials you chose to work with relate to your conceptual premise. A floorplan/layout is not necessary to include with a submission. Gallery 44 will provide curatorial and installation support for selected submissions.
If you have any questions about the submission process, please contact the Gallery.
