Gallery 44 is a dynamic space and artist-run centre led by a group of artists, curators and educators. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to support all three pillars of our programming mandate—Education, Exhibitions and Membership. The Operations Assistant will contribute to developing and realizing shows in our Main Gallery, Vitrines and Members' Galleries, support membership and the seasonal workshops series and youth programs.
The role is designed to offer an emerging arts worker the opportunity to gain hands-on, working knowledge of G44's programming—assisting with planning and implementing our exhibitions program, membership onboarding and orientation, and educational workshops for youth and adult learners. The Operations Assistant will work directly with artists, guest curators, artist-educators, designers and Gallery 44 staff. This 28-hour per week position runs from September 2024 to March 2025.
The role offers a post-secondary graduate the opportunity to develop new skills in a collaborative work environment, alongside a supportive and engaged community of volunteers, staff and Board members. Main Responsibilities
1. Exhibitions and Public Programs
Assisting with planning and production of exhibitions:
- Monitoring critical paths and project budgets
- Sourcing and purchasing installation supplies and materials
- Designing exhibition wayfinding and interpretive materials including labels, maps and floor plans
- Registration and day-of technical support of online and in-person programs (artist talks, reading groups, screenings, etc)
- Preparing promotional material in consultation with the Head of Communications.
- Copyediting exhibition descriptions in accordance with the Gallery’s style guide
- Independently produce one group or solo exhibition in the Members’ Gallery, including liaising with member-artists, generating promotional content, exhibition design and installation.
2. Education and Community Outreach
Supporting the planning, promotion and implementation of educational workshops for youth and adult learners:
- Contribute to online and in-person youth and adult learning workshops; facilitating administrative processes, technical delivery and support
- Support Darkroom Club by managing registration, scheduling facilities and procuring workshop supplies and materials.
- Facilitate the logistic coordination of our OUTREACH Symposium by drafting contracts, managing registration and participant correspondence and supporting program implementation.
- Support the annual student exhibition CameraLinks, including preparing and distributing the call for submissions and related promotional materials, corresponding with teachers, students and industry professionals, managing contracts, forms, artwork inventory and assisting with installation.
- Conduct research to develop and expand online and in-person adult learning programs.
- Support the administration and technical delivery of online and in-person workshops, including registering events and participants with third-party platform Eventbrite, procuring materials for workshops and offering assistance to instructors as needed.
- Populate workshop webpages in accordance with Gallery style guides, manage registration and waitlists.
3. Membership and Facilities
Supporting the delivery of member services including recruitment and orientation events:
- Schedule new member and equipment orientations and enroll participants
- Coordinate member volunteers
3. General
- Assist all staff with front desk service for members and the public, sharing information about exhibitions and membership, and lending equipment to members.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will possess basic knowledge of contemporary photography and related practices; will be interested in starting a career in the arts and cultural field; will understand the value of arts to the healthy ecosystem of a city such as Toronto; and will bring a positive attitude and collaborative spirit to the position.
The ideal candidate will also possess a combination of the following skills and qualifications:
- College or university graduate from a related discipline (such as studio arts, arts management/administration, with an interest in photography and/or image arts)
- Eager to learn skills related to managing complex projects from concept to realization
- Organized, motivated and collaborative
- Strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Good interpersonal skills
Eligibility
Applicants must also meet the requirements of Young Canada Works–Building Careers in Canada candidate eligibility.
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
- are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).
