FAQ
How does the submission review process work?
Submissions are reviewed by the members of the Membership and Facilities Committee (MFC) in a single meeting shortly after the deadline. The Member-in-Residence and Curatorial proposals are reviewed and selected first. Lottery names are drawn next. Then, proposals are selected to fill the remaining exhibition slots. Brief notes from the jury can be requested.
How many submissions do you usually receive?
We received 37 submissions in total last year. Out of those submissions, 30 members submitted work for consideration for exhibitions in the Members' Gallery and Production Gallery. From those 30 submissions, we confirmed the participation of 12 individual member artists. We received 14 submissions for the Member-in-Residence opportunity, and just a handful of curatorial project submissions.
The chances of receiving some opportunity to exhibit are higher than the Main Gallery and Vitrines open calls, which are also open to the public.
My project isn't quite complete, can I still submit?
Yes! You can propose an idea for a new project, or you can propose to exhibit work from an existing unfinished project. Most artists we work with continue to develop new work toward their exhibition date. Exhibition details must be finalized about 8 weeks before the opening.
If submitting a project that's in progress, you should include images that support this, such as similar past work or current works in progress. This is important as it gives the jury a good idea of what the final outcome may look like. The jury will also want to see that your proposal is viable to complete within the time frame, so a short description of your work plan is also helpful to include.
What support will I have for my show?
Beyond providing a venue, we can provide the following to support your show:
• Advice with planning and installing your exhibition from the Head of Membership & Facilities
• Access to a selection of A/V or presentation equipment, such as TVs, speakers, plinths, etc.
• Exhibition confirmation letter if you'd like to apply for Exhibition Assistance grants
• Access to basic tools and hardware to install your show
How does the lottery system work?
The MFC reserves a small portion of member exhibition slots to program via a lottery system. All proposals submitted for the Members' Gallery and Production Gallery opportunities are included in the lottery draw and are assigned a number. Numbers are drawn out of a (virtual) hat.
While lottery slots are not reviewed for merit, you still need to submit a full proposal in order to add your name to the lottery. This allows us to expedite the board review process and notify members about their shows without delay.
