To open the 2014/15 season of Talking Photography, we will be discussing Photography and Standards. Photography is somewhat unique next to other artistic mediums because of its democratization and accessibility, which has allowed for endless experimentation on the part of the photographer. However, photography is also a medium dominated by powerful and predominant standards in every regard from the technical to the conceptual. Where these standards have contributed to, and in many ways created our modern perception and representation of the world at large, we must consider whether they are still relevant or beneficial to the advancement of the medium, our expression, and interpretation of photographic imagery. Similarly when a standard becomes so embedded in the tradition of popular culture, at what point does it become cliché?
Join us on October 1st as we explore the standards of photography, their impacts on the medium, and the world we attempt to capture and represent.
