Keeping a Living Library

Join Gallery 44 for a library tour and discussion including a casual show-and-tell of books selected by Gallery 44 staff and artists.

Join Volume MTL and Gallery 44 for a library tour and discussion. We will open with a casual show-and-tell of books selected by Gallery 44 staff and artist members which will lead into an open discussion about the value of small libraries and how to activate them.

Gallery 44’s library contains over 1000 works with a focus on rare artist monographs, esoteric technical manuals, and artist-run publications. The lending library is open to members 24/7 and to the public by appointment.

ABOUT VOLUME MTL

Responding to the expanding global network of art book fairs, Volume MTL was created to fill a gap in Montreal’s arts scene. The need for a major annual gathering along the lines of the pioneering New York Art Book Fair had been discussed among those in the local arts milieu for years. Drawing from the success of ARCMTL’s annual small press and zine fair, Expozine and its Grande print and poster art fair, Volume MTL focuses on the distinct world of artist’s books and art publishing. Volume MTL is not only the first art-publishing event in Montreal and Quebec, it’s also the first bilingual event of its kind in North America. Providing a gathering space for English and French artists based in Montreal, North America, and internationally, Volume MTL encourages and supports the arts publishing sector from many angles. At a time where art publishing and innovative and artisanal artists’ book production is exploding around the world, Volume MTL fosters the development of the sector locally and nationally by generating communication between audiences, publishers, and artists.

Gallery 44 acknowledges that it is situated on stolen land. We work and create on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, the Wendat and the Mississaugas of the Credit. This land is home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis and is protected by the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement—a treaty that extends to Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations and invites us to share the land peacefully through mutual cooperation. Gallery 44 is inspired by the spirit of this agreement and through our work, seeks to share space and build equitable and reciprocal relationships across communities. Read More
