Online Workshop

Lighting for Still Life Photography

Darren Rigo

This workshop with visual artist Darren Rigo will cover an introduction to strobe lights and how to use them to light still life compositions. As well, this workshops will teach you how to use natural light, and any available light, to create a beautiful composition while keeping track of some of the technical aspects involved. Through learning these techniques, students will be able to experiment with different ways of lighting their images and take their concepts to a new level! This workshop is an important resource when thinking about lighting your still life images beautifully and not to be missed!

Participants are asked to bring one of their favourite still life images by another artist to share with the group.

Darren Rigo is a Toronto-based artist who creates work inspired by the absurdity in everyday life. His practice reacts to location as a source of inspiration while considering the endlessly evolving nature of photography.

Gallery 44 acknowledges that it is situated on stolen land. On the ancestral and traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe and the Huron-Wendat, who are the original owners and custodians of this land that they continue to inhabit today.

Acknowledging the land on which we work and create is an important first step towards truth and reconciliation, however, much more needs to be done by settlers, by our government, and by us as arts practitioners to educate ourselves and others, and to endeavor to end ongoing colonial violence.

During this global pandemic, it is important to acknowledge that Indigenous communities in Canada continue to live under increasingly inequitable conditions.
