In this workshop, taking place at the Toronto Reference Library, participants will be introduced to a range of visual and archival resources, with a special focus on the Picture Collection. They will learn how to navigate and engage with the collection as a source of inspiration, research, and image-making. The session will also highlight additional materials available to them, including photobooks, artist monographs, and other reference tools.
As part of the workshop, participants will receive a guided tour of the Picture Collection led by a librarian, including access to special and non-circulating materials. This behind-the-scenes look offers an opportunity to better understand how artists, designers, and researchers have historically used the collection.
Following the tour, participants will participate in a hands-on creative exercise that invites them to respond to or work with selected materials from the collection. Through this process, they’ll explore ways of reframing, remixing, and interpreting found imagery as a starting point for their own artistic practice.
