This workshop is intended for photographers at all levels who are curious about the fundamentals of working with a manual 35mm camera and black and white film. Instructor Joel Rodriguez will guide participants through camera controls, loading and exposing film using internal and spot metering techniques and developing black and white negatives in the darkroom.
Participants will have the opportunity to shoot indoors or outdoors before processing their film during the workshop. No previous analogue photography experience is required. All materials will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their 35mm film camera if they have one; otherwise please indicate on the registration form if a camera is needed.

Explore the fundamentals of three analogue camera formats through this hands-on workshop series. Over three sessions, participants will be introduced to 35mm, medium format and large format photography, learning how to use each camera system, shooting black and white film or paper negatives, and processing their negatives (in the darkroom). Designed for photographers of all levels, this series offers an accessible introduction to the distinct possibilities of working with different analogue formats.
Joel Rodriguez is a documentary photographer and visual artist based in Toronto. His practice centers on analogue photography, memory, and material process, with a strong focus on darkroom-based image making
As a darkroom instructor, Joel focuses on film development, enlarging techniques, and print refinement, supporting photographers at all stages of their analogue practice. His one-on-one sessions emphasize technical clarity, confidence in the darkroom, and an understanding of photography as a slow and intentional process. He also offers portfolio development support, assisting photographers with editing, sequencing, and articulating their work.
He holds a BFA in Film Production from York University and has presented his work through exhibitions and public programs with Arts Etobicoke, Latcham Art Centre, Gallery 44, Nuit Blanche, and the CONTACT Photography Festival. Through teaching and mentorship, Joel is committed to creating accessible and supportive learning environments for photographers.
