D.I.Y. Outdoor Installations

Cecilia Estalles

We have the power to create a gallery or an art platform accessible to the public. We can take our art, identity, vision, and manifestos to a place that is witness to the everyday, the streets. Putting our images on the streets means having our voices heard and to be seen. It also means showing the world how we see the world, how we feel, our lives, what we are, what we like or what we deeply love. Public spaces become activated and transformed, while we tell narratives that all can identify with, sharing these ideas with your neighbours, families, or even tourists. Everything becomes part of our everyday landscape. This workshop is free on a first-come first-serve basis. Please bring your images printed on regular paper. …”Let’s, then, show on the most visible walls of the highest modern buildings, in the most aesthetically strategic places in blue collar neighbourhoods, in communes, in front of public parks, sport stadiums and outdoor theatres. We are going to take picturesque and sculptural works outside of museums (cemeteries) and away from the hands of private and commercial interests in order to fulfill a maximum public service and for the collective good, something positive and useful for the culture of the masses.”David Alfaro Siqueiros – A call to Argentine artists.

Cecilia was born in the summer of ‘82 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She began her studies in photography at the age of 19. At the age of 22, she joined the PH15 Foundation’s team as a technician and teacher. In parallel, she takes photography classes with artist: Alberto Goldenstein, Augusto Zanela, Fabiana Barreda and Julieta Escardó.Over the years, she participated and exhbiitied her photographs in various venues such as the Bienal Arte x Arte (Biennale of Art by Art), Bienal Bahia Blanca (Biennale of White Bahia), Salón Nacional (National Salón), Galería Big Sur (Big Sur Gallery), and Festival de la Luz (Festival of Light), etc.She is a co-founder of M.A.F.I.A (Moviemiento Agentino de Fotografos Independientes Autoconvocados - The Movement of Independent and self-assigned Argentine Photographers). In photography as in her everyday life, she is interested in addressing issues pertaining to what is in her proximity, what provokes emotion and affect. Through her work she also investigates what is visceral rather than what is rational and objective in order to capture the exterior and visual demonstrations of what exists in the interior.

Gallery 44 acknowledges that it is situated on stolen land. We work and create on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, the Wendat and the Mississaugas of the Credit. This land is home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis and is protected by the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement—a treaty that extends to Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations and invites us to share the land peacefully through mutual cooperation. Gallery 44 is inspired by the spirit of this agreement and through our work, seeks to share space and build equitable and reciprocal relationships across communities. Read More
