In Wil Murray’s first workshop for Gallery 44, he will lead participants through processes that extend the brush strokes of painting into the darkroom. This workshop is suitable for painters, photographers and collage artists wishing to explore the borderlands between these mediums. Murray will guide participants through the creation of a small work of art built up from a single brushstroke. Techniques covered in a hands-on manner include: medium format photography of original brushstrokes and development of negatives, painting on negatives, multiple exposure printing and sandwiching of negatives, collage practices, and painting on prints. The workshop will also include a demonstration of hand-colouring fibre-based prints with Marshall’s photo oils.

Wil Murray was born in Calgary and studied drawing at the Alberta College of Art + Design. He has exhibited across Canada and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Canada, The Hole in New York and the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Solo exhibitions include Please Boss Remember Me at VITRINE, London(UK), Die Welt In Farben at p|m Gallery, Toronto and Last Summer I Build A 1:8 Scale Model of Your Vagina at Staatsgalerie Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin(DE). Murray’s work was recently presented in Future Station: 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, and he received an honourable mention in the 2008 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Murray is currently living and working in Okotoks, Alberta.
