Solidarity Economy for Artist Projects

Are you an artist with a vision for a project but lack the resources to make this happen? Have you envisioned a sustainable economic model outside of the Western capitalist system? Are you tired of waiting for grant results and having your fate decided upon by a jury that may or may not understand your work?

If you have answer yes to one of these questions, this workshop is for you.

G44 opens the Fall 2016 Workshop season by revealing the budget for the gallery workshops, inviting participants to pay what they believe is fair based on the transparent budget provided at the start of this workshop.

In this session, soJin Chun shares information on alternative economic models for artists and arts organization Internationally with a strong emphasis in Brazil. Given the current political and economic reality in the region, it is a major understatement to say that there is a lack of government funding. After the coupe d’état in May, the subsequent closure of the Ministry of Culture and its reopening under a right-winged government, Brazil is experiencing a difficult cultural climate with many uncertainties.

Despite this complex social and political situation, there are many alternative art projects that are self-sustained and self-sufficiently supported by the arts community in collaboration. Some of the case studies include sustainable-models based on transparent budgeting, collective evaluation and pricing, as well as non-capitalist methods of exchanging money and goods. By demonstrating some case studies on alternative self-sustaining art projects, soJin provides the possibility of what is feasible for artists by working collectively and finding alternative strategies for surviving in the arts.

Participants are encouraged to bring their ideas for potential art projects in the written form. The group will strategize together to envision alternative economic models for realizing these projects.

Gallery 44 acknowledges that it is situated on stolen land. We work and create on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, the Wendat and the Mississaugas of the Credit. This land is home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis and is protected by the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement—a treaty that extends to Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations and invites us to share the land peacefully through mutual cooperation. Gallery 44 is inspired by the spirit of this agreement and through our work, seeks to share space and build equitable and reciprocal relationships across communities. Read More
