The Verant Richards Award is awarded annually to an OCADU graduating student for excellence in experimental photography. Verant Richards was a graduate of OCADU and a founding member of Gallery 44, known for his innovative artistic practice that pushed beyond the confines of a self-limiting definition of photography.
A Pixel in Time is an abstract portrayal of gaming devices in classic time periods reinterpreted in a modern meets playful manner with Rococo, Egyptian and Bauhaus rooms coming to life. In our ever-evolving technologically advanced world, we struggle to shake the hold certain games have on us. There are games of skill, culturally iconic consoles from the 1990s and toys designed to raise a pet or human into happier, smarter and more self-sufficient beings. What happens when these everlasting games meet some of the most influential periods in history? Will they stand on their own or crumble against the clock?
Sofija Lupert’s practice engages the bond between art and the natural world. Lupert employs the transformative power of photography to reflect on the fantastical abilities of the mind. Recently graduating from OCAD University with a BFA in Photography, Lupert uses 3D programming and 360 virtual spaces to expand her imaginative landscapes created using a composite photographic technique.
