Photographs made on assignment for Now Magazine’s “Newsfront” page, circa 2007-2017.
From its beginning in the early 1980s, the free weekly Now Magazine was one of the few sources of work about Toronto by local photographers. Most notably, the stand-alone photograph featured on page three was a rare example of an image presented independently of a written story within a Canadian mass-media publication. Over the decade covered in this exhibition, the page underwent several name and design changes, transitioning from black-and-white to colour and adopting a busier text-heavy layout. However, the idea behind its original incarnation as a space for photographs documenting overlooked aspects of Toronto’s social and cultural life never completely vanished. In Public represents a modest contribution to a much larger archive tracing the public life of Toronto at a particular time in its history.
