The Atacama Desert will take your breath away, literally as well as figuratively. Perched on a plateau, west of the Andes Mountains, it conjures a higher plane of existence, a spiritual place whose desolation leaves room to contemplate life beyond the petty concerns of everyday existence. In some places, vast waves of sand shift endlessly, burying the rugged, salt-encrusted peaks that thrust out of the dunes, like sharks’ teeth emerging from a stormy sea. In others, mountains melt into swathes of colour, blending with the sky and land, creating boundless horizons.
Giving succour to few flora or fauna, lacking sufficient water to sustain human life, experiencing the desert is awe-inspiring and humbling. It is a place of limitless possibilities, which I hope to share with viewers, a place where we can expand our minds and our consciousness of the universe. Although images fail to convey the vastness of the Atacama Desert, its unearthly allure is undeniable.
