Non-abstract photographic imagery provides viewers with structural keys for understanding the artist’s intent for the work. It is direct and records a moment in time with adequate contextual information to understand the story being told. The significances implied and meanings conveyed are for the most part clear and unambiguous.
In this collection, images from the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games are deconstructed from original referential contexts through the abstraction of colour, form, and composition. Foregrounds and backgrounds are deconstructed, colours are consolidated, and perspective is altered. Resultant images are flattened to isolate new compositions capturing the essential form, motion, and pageantry of the Games. In short, the photographic image is transformed in ways akin to an artist working with paints, brushes, and canvas.
