OUTREACH is Gallery 44’s award-winning program that provides youth from underserved communities throughout the GTA with a series of hands-on workshops and discussions that explore the visual power of images.
During this edition of OUTREACH 2021, G44 delivered a virtual program using one of photography’s earliest processes - Cyanotypes. Cyanotype is an antique photographic printing process distinctive for producing Prussian blue monochromatic prints. Using non-toxic materials, participants brought some of the “darkroom” magic into their homes through this process and will be presenting the results in this culminating exhibition.
The 2021 exhibition Bloom celebrates the creative accomplishments of participating youth from:
- JAYU
- Nia Centre for the Arts
- The 519
- Miles Nadal JCC (Disability/Visibility Photography Project)
Every year, Gallery 44 awards two participants from our OUTREACH program the David Barker Maltby Award. This Award celebrates David Barker Maltby’s commitment to education, community activism and documentary photography. We will be presenting a third participant with an award generously sponsored by Toronto Image Works. Award winners are nominated by instructors and selected by a jury, based on their talent and commitment to continuing with their art practice. Winners receive a complimentary membership to Gallery 44 and one-on-one mentorship with local artists.
OUTREACH 2021 is generously supported by Toronto Image Works, the Maltby Family and the many individual donors who support this program.
