Immigration and Midyan Samson's status in Canada have long served as an anchor in her life and a recurring theme in her artistic practice. For over a decade, Samson's family lived in a state of uncertainty, unsure if they could work, access healthcare, or remain in the place they called home.
A journey that began as a matter of survival—defined by instability, each step a gamble and still unfolding—over time, Samson's parents found the strength to rebuild their lives in pursuit of peace. Before they became the artist's "Mom" and "Dad", they were Samson and Yirgalem—two young people with hopes and dreams for their future. Yet immigration systems do not recognize the full scope of who people are.
This project is an attempt to look back beyond the roles and responsibilities shaped by migration and honour them as individuals. In doing so, Midyan Samson asks: Who gets to decide whether starting over was worth it—her parents, the government, or those of us who inherited the outcome?
This exhibition is presented in partnership with Shoot for Peace.

Midyan Samson is a photographer and co-founder of 4 The West End, known for her versatile style shaped by curiosity and a love for challenges. Through her work, she captures and connects the stories of her community, often exploring themes of immigration, Eritrean identity, and the search for comfort in moments of discomfort. Midyan’s passion for storytelling extends beyond her own photography, as she actively supports and uplifts local artists, creating spaces for others to share their voices. Her work has been exhibited at City Hall, Toronto Metropolitan University, Cloverdale Mall, and Albion Mall. Her commitment to exploring identity and belonging through art reflects her personal journey and invites others to reflect on their own stories.
Launched in 2015, Shoot for Peace began as a youth-led grassroots organization founded by Yasin Osman with the belief that art can offer different perspectives and build community. Our mission is community healing through art. Our mandate is to deliver high quality community programming that makes arts and arts opportunities accessible to underserved youth. Our vision is to launch a generation of artists and storytellers that are empowered by their identities and experiences, and prepared for professional and personal success. Over the past few years, we've successfully reached and served youth from all six boroughs of Toronto.
