Bio
My work is premised on a history of political trauma, cultural displacement, and chronic illness ... experiences that left me alienated from my own history and body, with a longing for connectedness and a cohesive self-identity. I create to deliberately shape a sense of self that circumstance left inchoate, giving visual form to what is seemingly formless within me.
I pursue this reclamation through tableau-style photography, and highly abstracted landscapes. Treating the studio and post-production as crucibles of meaning-making, I try to construct self-contained, expressive realities rather than merely mirroring the external world. Through choreographed collaborations and intensive editing techniques like solarization and motion blur, I build subtly surreal worlds layered with symbolism.
Yet, my creative activity holds an inherent contradiction. Rather than resolving the ambiguities of my identity, my practice endlessly refracts and multiplies them, into ever more diverse and elevated forms. I reproduce the very indeterminacies that I set out to overcome ... a strange irony that I've come to accept as inevitable.
