Bio
Molly Steels is a Toronto based artist originally from Bradford, Ontario.
Her practice often involves themes of re-imagining family archives, connection and challenging heteronormativity. By using photography to blend the past into the present, Steels reflects upon the social structures that shape her identity. Using conceptual still life imagery, self portraiture and physical intervention with images, she aims to visualize grief, longing, and memory. Duality and nuance within these experiences shape her practice.
Steels’ work has been exhibited in galleries and festivals across Canada, including Exposure Photography Festival's International Open Call, Aurora Cultural Centre and Artspace TMU. Steels has been published by numerous magazines such as Function, RAD, Blank Spaces and twice on the cover of QWERTY. Steels holds a BFA in Image Arts and a minor in Sociology from Toronto Metropolitan University.
