Bio
Sayani Sarkar is a Toronto-based photographer and storyteller originally from Kolkata, India. Working across street, portrait, and conceptual photography, her practice is shaped by the experience of moving between cultures and navigating shifting identities. She turns to image-making as a way of understanding belonging, displacement, and the emotional undercurrents of everyday life.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty and absurdities of existence, she explores the tension between individuality and conformity, confronting the quiet struggles that often go unnoticed. Her work creates unsettling yet poetic narratives that invite viewers to pause and reconsider the world they move through.
With a background in theatre, writing, and painting, Sayani brings a multidisciplinary sensibility to her photographs, blurring storytelling, performance, and observation.
She is a 2025 participant of ArtsWorksTO, the Toronto Arts Council newcomer program, and continues to develop long-term projects examining identity, human connection, and psychological intimacy.
