Theme
blue
a ubiquitous color
from the faintest wisp that pulses in your veins, the creamy cobalt of Chinese porcelain, the deep richness of lapis lazuli, to the indigo of a pair of jeans
blue is a feeling, music, the heart of a flame. More than anything blue is a chameleon — transforming and transmuting our emotions and lives.
What does blue mean to you?
Q & A
Q: I am a member and would like to submit to the call. I have no idea what I’m doing, I’ve never really done this before! How do I start?
A: There’s always a first time for everything and this is a good place to start if you’ve not exhibited before. As for the submission, all the required info is in the call and submission form. Usually the first step is to look at the call and the theme — this year it’s blue. There’s a brief statement in the call which is meant more as a starting point of inspiration than restrictive. You are welcome to take this broad theme and interpret it in whatever way you like. You may find the theme resonant in a piece you already have or you may be inspired to make a new one. It’s totally up to you. This year we're sending out the call early so members have lots of time to make new work. We encourage you to be brave and open and make whatever you want!
Once you have a few pieces, pick your top few photos (max of 6) and submit them. The number of photos you submit does not affect how many we select — we look at the whole show and every work in curation. We will select at least 1 piece from everyone who submits.
Once the work is selected, you need to print, frame and deliver the piece to G44 before the show in July. All dates are in the call email. We can also advise on this process.
Q: I have some ideas and would like help choosing and preparing my selection(s) -- what do I do?
A: Best way would be to create a Google drive folder with the selects you are considering (10 images max), and email it to Grace with some notes on how you see the images relate to the theme, and which ones you are leaning toward. If you are struggling between specific images -- also let her know and she can then provide written feedback and hopefully that'll help you to narrow it down.
Q: How should I interpret the theme? Could you please give me some examples for the theme if possible?
A: Great question. The answer is very simple: you are free to interpret the theme however you want. The theme is broad as we want you to feel free to apply it to your work in any way you see fit. All we want to see is interesting, beautiful work and your thoughts about how it relates to this theme. We would never tell you that your interpretation is not valid or correct.
Q: is there a size requirement for the pictures?
A: All sizes are acceptable, but we may limit very large we accept or ask for a smaller print. If you want advice on printing specs or what size your digital image files can support email printing@gallery44.org.
Q: Are there rules about framing / mounting?
A: Work must be supplied ready to hang. Our preference is for framed work with D-rings. Professionally mounted work with hanging hardware is acceptable. Works printed and installed in alternative ways are usually ok. Loose prints are not accepted. If you need advice on framing and mounting contact darren@gallery44.org
Q: Can I submit a piece that I recently exhibited? Or is it better to submit work I haven't already shown?
A: That's completely up to you. There is no restriction on exhibition history of the work, so long as it's been produced after Jan 1, 2022. This is also a chance to show new work should you choose to do so. If you are not sure, feel free to submit both!
Q: I don't know what price to set for my work, can you help?
A: Please email Maegan at maegan@gallery44.org and she'll be happy to assist you with this.
