The members exhibition spaces are sites for artistic experimentation, we're open to reviewing any ideas you would like to propose, include projects that are still in progress. Past programming has included group and and solo exhibitions, residency projects, a reading room, an art lab and more.
Members' Exhibition spaces include the Members' Gallery and Production Gallery as well as other special exhibition opportunities. Since 2023, we've been paying modest artist fees for all exhibitions.
This annual call covers multiple opportunities outlined below. We are currently programming September 2024 – October 2025.
Opportunities
Members’ Gallery Exhibitions & Lottery (3 – 5 recipients annually)
- Includes exhibition slot in the Members’ Gallery schedule (~4 – 6 weeks)
- you must be a member for at least 1 year at the time of the submission deadline
- All submissions are also considered for programmed group shows
Member-in-Residence (1 recipient annually)
- $500 residency fee (upon initiation of residency)
- free access to Gallery 44's facilities for production of your project (exact schedule TBD, between October 1st and March 31st)
- discounted printing during residency
- a reserved spot for a FolioForum
- one-on-one review with Gallery 44 Head of Exhibitions
- exhibition of work created during the residency in Gallery 44 Members' Gallery
- All submissions are also entered in the lottery and considered for programmed group shows
Curatorial Proposals for The Members’ Gallery and/or Production Gallery (1 – 3 recipients annually)
- Includes 1 exhibition slot in the Members’ Gallery schedule (~4-6 weeks) or Production Gallery Schedule (~2 – 4 months).
- All artists included in exhibition must be current Gallery 44 members.
- The exhibition should include the work of at least three members (you may include yourself).
- The curator is responsible, with support from the Head of Membership and Facilities, for coordinating the details of the exhibition, including soliciting members’ work, collecting work, and installing exhibition.

FAQ
How does the submission review process work?
- Submissions are reviewed by the members of the Membership and Facilities Committee in a single meeting shortly after the deadline. We select the Member in Residence, draw lottery names and then select group shows.
- In recent years submissions have been low (under 30 submissions for about 9 available opportunities), so the chances of receiving some opportunity to exhibit are much higher than our open call (which is about 150 submissions for only about 6 shows)
- You can request committee notes on your submission.
My project isn't quite complete, can I still submit?
- Yes! You can actually propose a totally new idea if you like. Just include similar past work or works in progress that will illuminate your proposal.
- Actually, the majority of artists we work with continue to develop new work toward the exhibition date. We usually finalize works and details for the exhibition about 8 weeks before the opening.
What support will I have for my show?
- Heather or another staff member will work with you to plan your exhibition every step of the way. Feel free to rely on them for as much advice as you need. We usually help with selecting work, deciding an exhibition design, promotional plans and more.
- We can usually lend or source any special AV equipment or presentation like speakers/TVs/plinths etc.
- We are working toward paying CARFAC exhibition fees for members gallery shows. Some in-kind support for the production of your work may be available, you can also apply to our In-Kind Financial Assistance program. We can also help you discover and apply for eligible grants.
What are the most important parts of my submission?
- Your images. Having a cohesive and interesting body of work to share is most important by far.
- For curatorial submissions or Member-in-Residence: a clear and detailed proposal. (All successful MIR apps have had a one page residency plan included)
- Artist statements must be concise, clearly related to your images and demonstrate a level of visual literacy. Have someone give yours a good honest edit before you submit.
Why do I need to submit work to enter the lottery?
- In regards to the lottery, the submissions are not reviewed for merit. All the names are just drawn from a hat (or virtual hat).
- The primary reason we require submissions for the lottery now is to flag any work that may be problematic to exhibit so we have ample time to review and discuss with the member.
- It also expedites the board review process so we can notify members about their shows quicker.
